Linen: the beautiful flax fibre that has given the cotton fabric a run for its money
Linen is a fabric made wholly from the fibers of the flax plant and has been in existence from several hundred centuries back or shall we say since a very, very long time.

Flax is an important cash crop plant which is much in demand for its seeds and fibers. It is an annual plant and just takes about 100 days to grow the flax plant to perfect condition to be harvested. Flax is difficult to harvest. The full flax plant has to be uprooted, to keep the full length of the fibers which results in a fine yarn. Careful harvesting is necessary to ensure quality. The process of making the textile is also long winded and complex. Hence it is very costly to make linen fabric.
Linen fabric can absorb up to 20% of its weight in moisture before you can feel any dampness. This is because of its structure which soaks up water to its center. Because of this linen is very much in demand as napkins and dish towels. It also releases moisture to the air and remains dry.

Hemp fibers are 4 to 7 feet in length. Linen fibres are comparatively much shorter at 1.5 to 3 feet in length.
Flax fibers are yellowish buff to gray; hemp fibers are yellowish gray to dark brown.
Hemp has the least elasticity of all natural fibres (stretches less) and compared to linen quite poor.
But Hemp is highly resistant to rotting, mold, mildew and salt water. It is also highly resistant to sunlight so it does not fade or disintegrate easily.
The average yield of hemp between 500 to 800 lb. is much higher than that of flax (fiber for linen) at 325 to 450 lb. in the same area of land. The hemp yield also translates to a biomass that can be converted into clean-burning alcohol used as fuel.
But the virtues of the hemp fibre, has not made it cheaper compared to the linen fiber primarily because the manual effort from start to finish is much more for hemp.

Linen has an excellent resistance to degradation by heat, in fact, is less affected by heat and sun light as are cotton and other fibers. An excellent resistance to strong alkalis, not much affected by low density acids if washed immediately, it would be damaged only by highly dense acids like any other.
